Have you ever felt like your life was on autopilot as if you’re going through the motions of life just existing without a plan?

Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar...

You wake up feeling overwhelmed because once again you hit the snooze button one too many times and now you’re rushing trying to get everyone out of the house in less than an hour.

You’re fussing at the kids because they’re moving too slow (because you woke up late) and you can’t afford for them to miss their school bus or you’ll be late to work.

There’s no time for breakfast so everyone has to grab something and get out of the house.

You rush to work praying that you don’t get caught in traffic. Thankfully you make it just in time for your 8 hour shift.

Once the clock hits 5pm you rush home to get the kids from aftercare because they get out of school before you get off work.

By the time you get home, you’re exhausted, but you have to cook dinner, help the kids with their homework, prepare for baths and bedtime just to do it all over again the next day.

Does this sound like your life?

This was similar to my life a few years ago. I was literally repeating the same routine day in and day out. I was anxious for Friday to come and dreading Sunday because I knew I would have to start the routine all over again.

I was simply existing going through the motions of life without a purpose.

I would often think to myself that there had to be more to my life than being a wife, mother and an employee.

Everyone was getting my time, but me. I felt unfulfilled and discontent. I was stuck!

Many people don't even realize that they're existing in life because they've been doing the same routine for so long, it's just a part of life.

Or maybe they are aware but feel stuck because they don't know where to start in order to see positive changes in their life.

Existing looks like the following...

  • You’re unclear of your purpose and you feel lost and confused about life in general

  • You waste a lot of time on social media and watching TV while comparing your life to others

  • You allow your fears to keep you trapped

  • You worry about things out of your control but you won’t do anything to change your situation

  • You’re mindlessly going through life without a plan

A person who is existing in life may stay in a relationship even though they're dissatisfied and unhappy. Or stay at a dead-end job that they hate just for the paycheck. They're afraid to step out of their comfort zone due to fear and as a result, they're stuck.

  • You're doing things that make you happy

  • You're walking in your purpose

  • You're using your God-given gifts

  • You're living life on your own terms

  • You have a peace of mind with the life you're creating for yourself

  • You're choosing your own path in life

  • You're making your own decisions about how you want to show up in the world

Be 100% honest with yourself, do you enjoy your life? Are you comfortable with the decisions and choices you're making on a daily basis? Do you feel like you're living your best life possible?

If you answer no to any of the above-mentioned questions, then it's time shift the direction of your life

In order to change your life, you have to be willing to confront your current situation and realize you're 100% responsible for your life

Embrace positive thinking

Pay attention to the thoughts that you consume on a daily basis because what you think is what you will become. Start each day with gratitude and focus on the good that is happening in your life. Jot down a few things you're grateful for each day in your journal.

Set both short term & long term goals

What are you working on? What do you want to see happen in your life in the next 3 months and the next 3 years? When you have goals that you're working towards you won't feel like you're just going through the motions of life, but you'll actually have a plan of action.

Discover your purpose

I love the quote by Oprah, "follow your passion; it will lead you to your purpose." What are you most passionate about? What makes you come alive? Your purpose in life doesn't have to be this big grand thing, it’s simply the thing you feel in your heart that you’ve been placed on earth to do. Don't overthink it, it's already in you, just be still and listen. When you know why you're here on earth your life will have more meaning and purpose.

Be your own best friend

I will be honest with you, sometimes the journey to being free can be lonely and the people you use to hang out with may not be down with the new you. That's ok! Enjoy spending time with yourself and doing things that you love. Create a "be free" list (bucket list) of all the things you want to do and then start doing it.

Do work you love and equally passionate about

Being free is not about becoming an entrepreneur. It's about doing things that you love and passionate about in order to live the life you want on your own terms. Don't settle for working at a mediocre job, do something that you're passionate about that doesn't feel like work. If you can't make the change today, start planning for it.

Ted Talk: Scott Dinsmore: How to find work you love

When I was laid off from my job a few years ago, I made a decision that I was going to live my life on my own terms. I could have easily went and found another job, but I didn't want to be in the same position all over again, being stuck in a routine and existing.

I chose to live my life to the fullest by doing what makes me happy. Almost 3 years later and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
