Name: Adrienne Nixon
When did you start your blog/business?
I started a personal blog back in 2006. It wasn’t until 2012 that it turned into a business/personal blog.
What triggered you to pursue your dreams and begin creating the life you want?
Honestly, I didn't realize what I was doing was my dream until I started Adrienne's Essentials. I NEVER wanted to sew for people and I always say it was a "God" thing because it was NOT my plan.
What do you enjoy most about living life on your own terms?
I love the fact that with God's help, I create my own schedule. That has to be THE BEST THING EVER.
How are you living out your purpose?
Right now I know that I'm supposed to uplift and encourage. My blog and social media allows me to do just that on a daily basis. It's the best when I receive an email and someone was blessed by something that I've said.
Describe an a-ha moment.
My first a-ha moment was when I made my very first garment for someone. Because this wasn't something I wanted to do I hesitated before approaching this young woman and telling her I wanted to make her a dress. When I told her she cried because she was so happy. She's tall, in ministry and it was hard for her to find something appropriate. She told me that she had been praying to find a solution and I told her out of the blue that I wanted to make her something. It was then that I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing.
What does being free mean to you?
Being free means A LOT to me. The first thing that comes to mind is being free from working under someone else. Next has to be having the freedom to run my business the way God shows me to.
What has been your biggest challenge pursuing your purpose?
My biggest challenge was letting go of what others thought of me and what I was supposed to be doing. Once I stopped trying to please them I had peace.
What’s one thing that you want people to know about you or your business?
I absolutely love what I do. What I do is MORE than just sewing, photography and making spa products. I love taking a woman that is already beautiful and making her feel extra special in a garment that was made just for her body. I love capturing a moment in time and giving people photographs that will last forever. I love showing people that you don't have to smoke, drink or do drugs to relax. You can light one of my candles and put on some great music and have an escape in the comfort of your own home. What I do is more than a business, it's almost like a ministry.
What is your biggest fear? And how do you overcome your fears?
My biggest fear was not having the approval of those around me. I overcame that by the word of God. Romans 8:31 says If God is for me, who can be against me? That was all I needed.
How do you stay encouraged?
I pray and journal a lot. There have been times when I’ve literally felt like throwing in the towel. Then God would send a client who was so happy with their item, someone would send me a message on social media or my husband would tell me how proud he is of me and it's just what I needed to keep going. I keep inspiring quotes around me for days when I get tired and discouraged. I don't know if that happens to anyone else who has their own business, but it does happen to me from time to time.
What are you most proud of?
My most proudest business moment was making the color guard uniforms for Alabama A&M University for The Magic City Classic 2014. It's ONLY the BIGGEST HBCU classic in the COUNTRY lol.
How do you support other women?
If other women have a business and they have a product, I always try to buy or recommend them to someone who I know is looking for what they offer. Support is more than buying things. It's also telling others about them and what they do. Women in general, I try to always be encouraging and offer hugs (even e-hugs), and prayer when needed.
What is your favorite affirmation or quote?
My favorite affirmation is "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13
What’s your favorite book?
Other than the Bible, The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book literally changed my life.
What exciting things do you have planned for 2015?
2015 is already amazing! I'm working on an E-book for people who want to start sewing for hire. The book will be about the things I've learned, mistakes I've made and resources to help them get started. I'll also be speaking to women's groups about marriage. I've been married 18 years and I'm still young and that gives me a unique voice. My husband and I started a podcast about marriage and life that is already so much fun! That's just a few things that I'm able to share right now :)
